Since the conflict broke out in Sudan in April 2023, I have been supporting close family there as they have navigated displacement. Karkadeh (named after Sudanese hibiscus tea) is my long-term creative project to support them as they rebuild their lives. I am collaborating with artists and poets to sell fundraising merchandise via Everpress, that honours the beauty and creativity of my loved ones and their community... so that we can direct our resources to support them financially. Every month I co-facilitate an in-person gathering, where BIPOC people of all ages (from children to elders) can rest and play. We sit in circle, we play games, we read stories. It's the group I wish I'd had access to when I was a kid growing up in an un-diverse place in the 1980s, so that I could have seen myself reflected and had a space to just be. It's still needed now. This is an invitation to contribute towards the running costs, so it can be free for participants.
