What kind of things can I share in a somatic session?

Everything is welcome.

The beauty of embodiment practice is that there's space for anything that's here for you in the moment. You may want to explore friendships, partnerships, community building, parenting, care-giving, land-tending, disability, creativity, paid work, connection with beings who have passed, gender, spirituality, sexuality, places known and imagined, art, or anything else that calls your attention. And, within those explorations, all emotions and layers are welcome... anger, delight, fear, grief, joy, shame, sadness, uncertainty, and everything else we can experience as a human.

You may arrive to a session with a clear sense of what you want to explore, or you may want to invite a felt sense to see what's present. Everything you share will be held with care and confidentiality.

What's the structure of a session?

Session structure: Opening, Flow, Integration

  • We begin in conversation, to establish what's here for you and the focus of our time together.
  • In somatic companionship, we "dance" between conceptual self awareness (processing logically through our thoughts, and making meaning with words) and embodied self awareness (using our senses to feel from within our bodies, connect to felt sense signals, and allow insight and shifts to emerge).
  • When it is welcome, you may want to explore sensations within your body. Any invitations from me for you to explore through embodied self awareness will be exactly that: invitations or offerings of practice or processes that you can choose to say no or yes or maybe to within each session.
  • Examples of somatic processes that I may offer to guide you through include: Resourcing, felt sensing, somatic boundary explorations, sensory awareness (Proprioception, Interoception, Exteroception), breath awareness, self-guided touch, intuitive movement, Constellations, verbal experiments, dance, visualisation, Centering.
  • My approach is multi-modal. We may also welcome in other creative or spiritual practices such as art, writing, tarot, music, or anything else that feels supportive to your process.
  • We spend time at the end of each session integrating and making sense of what has emerged, and partner together to ensure that you leave feeling resourced.

This is my first time exploring intentional somatic practice and I'm a little nervous. Is it right for me?

It makes sense to be a little nervous - together, we can welcome that in, move slowly, and trust the container to hold what emerges. If you're feeling called to explore somatic practice, I invite you to trust that. There is no right way to feel, no set timescale, and no getting to be an expert in embodiment. If it helps, have a look at the testimonials to get a sense of what it might be like to work together. And please feel welcome to get in touch to ask any questions you may have. I offer a free Connection Call so we can sense if we might be a good fit to work together one-to-one - click here to book your call

In what ways is your approach trauma-informed?

Through professional learning and lived experience, I understand the need to respect and celebrate our body's edges and limits when being in this tender and expansive exploration of feeling. My approach is centered around invitations for you to check in with your capacity and make choices based on what you sense you need. We move slowly in partnership together, paying attention to the signals your bodymind is giving you - slowing down, changing route, pausing and stopping as needed.

I've experienced coaching before - are your somatic sessions the same?

If you've experienced life coaching, workplace coaching, mentorship or talking therapy, you might be well-practiced in talking through and thinking through issues to reach insights or outcomes or solutions or to set goals. My sessions are different - you're invited to spend time with your bodymind's holistic ways of knowing, which includes physical sensations, images, sensory experiences, energetic noticings, as well as thoughts and emotions... so that you can receive additional information about how you feel. This helps you access a rich sense of your internal landscape, and receive more insight with which to respond and make choices for your life.

I'm in talking therapy and/or see another body-based practitioner - how might sessions with you complement what I'm already doing?

Somatic sessions can flow within and support the ecosystem of your healing, by bringing awareness to your present experience. It can be a place to practice embodying the insights that emerge from talk therapy, and to integrate your experiences with other bodywork modalities, as well as a place to receive information about what you want to explore in those areas.
